Objectives:

 

              1) Students will understand what defines greatness in the sports world.

              2) Students will consider who may be the greatest player of all-time in their opinion.

              3) Students will learn about the different generations of basketball including rule changes and 

how the game is played.

 

Lesson:

    A1) Pass out questionnaire (Activity) - 30 Secs

  • Let class know that they can answer at any time during the lesson

 

              A) Identifying Players (Hook) – 1 min

 

-     Ask students to identify current basketball players from photographs that pop up

-     If the students know the players ask them to forget everything about them that is bias

 

              B) GOAT Criteria (Introduction)– 2 min

 

-        Ask the students what we should consider when evaluating players as the G.O.A.T

-        Give time for students to answer

-        Give my opinion on what to consider

-        Personal achievements, Team achievements, Impact on the court, Impact off the court

 

                             Q:          When evaluating the G.O.A.T. what should we consider?

 

-        Personal achievements, Team achievements, Impact on the court, Impact off the court

 

              C) Debate Video (Video): – 7 min

 

-        G.O.A.T Criteria and when they’re established in the NBA(tell class to look at dates established)

-        G.O.A.T Criteria in a single season

-        G.O.A.T Criteria in players career

-        Bill Russell outstanding stats

-        MJ vs LBJ (Lebron still has work to do)

-       Bill Russell: Stas and era (30 secs)

-       Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: Stats and era (30 secs)

-      Discuss what's the biggest difference between these players (The era they played in)

 

              E) Changes (Lecture); (Luke), (Fujita) – 5 min

              

-        The NBA has been around since 1946 and a lot of changes have happened to the game of basketball since then.

-        Banning of Basketball Interference (Wilt Chamberlain used this to his advantage)

-     The addition of the three point line (1979-80)

-     The hand check rule (Was implemented after MJ retired causing people to call the NBA soft nowadays)
